Scott Benson group receives massive exposure thanks to UFC Europe

Moose Jaw’s Scott Benson Band woke up with a little surprise over the weekend after finding out that one of their songs had been used in a 2020 promotional TikTok for a Connor McGregor / Donald Cerrone fight.

While it’s a surprise in itself that UFC Europe is using its cover of the song “ Requiem for a Dream, ” the number of views is what really came as a shock.

Meet producer and band member Jared Robinson.

“This video alone had over 700,000 views, and after looking around with just that feed alone, it looked like we were over 10 million. I looked at the video in more detail. and it appears to have been used for over 4,400 other videos. In total, the song has been streamed on TikTok 40 to 50 million times. “

The Scott Benson Band has been well known in Moose Jaw and the region for a number of years now, and is made up of 5 members; Scott Benson on violin and fiddle, Jared Dormer on drums, Cameron Church on bass, Andrew Fath on guitar and Robinson playing keyboard and taking care of production duties.

While having that kind of exposure for one of their songs is fantastic, Robinson says they, sadly, probably won’t see any pay for it.

“You have a song that is cut in half between the songwriters and the publishers. In that case, we would own the edition of our version of that song, but unfortunately for us, the songwriter, Clint Mansell, would be the one who collects all of the writer’s royalties for it. He probably has a nice little check coming up. “

You can listen to the Scott Benson Band through Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and other streaming services. While Robinson admits that streaming services in Canada have a long way to go in supporting artists, he believes good things are coming.
