Obituary of Charles Seamens (1935 – 2021) – Greensburg, Pennsylvania

Charles McIntosh Seamens, 86, of Greensburg, passed away on Thursday, December 23, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. Born October 31, 1935 in Greensburg, son of the late Ray Everett and Margaret McIntosh Seamens. He graduated from Greensburg High School with the class of 1953. During high school, in 1952, he proudly achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He continued his studies at Saint-Vincent College, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1958. After university, he was accepted into the School of Naval Officer Candidates (OCS). After successfully completing the OCS, Aviation Officer Candidate School and Aviation Flight Training, he was appointed Naval Aviator and Patrol Aircraft Commander. He received his golden wings in 1960. After leaving the Navy in 1964 as a full lieutenant, he worked for IBM’s office products division in Fairmont, West Virginia. He was promoted to the Washington, DC division and in 1966 returned to Pittsburgh with Honeywell Data Processing, bringing his family back to Greensburg. In 1972, he founded and built a successful insurance and marketing company, where he worked until his retirement. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, where he was a reader for over 45 years and a member of the parish council. He was a founding member of the Toastmasters International Leadership Organization in Fairmont, W.Va. He was also an avid golfer and a member of the Hannastown Golf Club since 1970, where he served on the board of directors. In addition, he has served on the board of directors of the Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce, past president of Mountain View Rotary, and past president and director emeritus of Greensburg Community Development Corp. He was also a Certified Recovery Specialist (CRS) for Gateway Rehabilitation Center and a daily volunteer and mentor at Gateway Rehabilitation, where, for over 30 years, he has provided advice on “There’s a Better Way to Live” . He was also proud to be a director of the Westmoreland Frick Hospital Foundation and chairman of the distribution committee since 2010, where he was also a director emeritus. He was predeceased this year by his beloved wife of 64 years, Dora Vallano Seamens; and will be sadly missed by her children, Charles M. (Kelli) Seamens Jr., MD., of Nashville, Tenn., Sueanne (Enzo) Zoratto, of Pittsburgh, Marcia (Larry) Walsh, of Greensburg, and Kristen (Geoff, MD.) Kurland, of Pittsburgh; grandchildren, Patrick (Madison) Seamens, Alexandra McIntosh (Gilberto) Navarro, MD., Olivia M. Zoratto, Julia M. Zoratto and Leigh (Mark) Miller; and great-grandchildren, Miller Seamens, Audrey, Lance and Kate. He is also survived by his brother, Colonel Howard R. Seamens (Donna); and many nieces and nephews. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, 524 N. Main St., Greensburg. A funeral mass for Charles will be held at 9:30 am on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, 300 N. Main St., Greensburg. Everyone is asked to go directly to the church. Those attending the gathering and funeral mass are encouraged to wear a mask. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Westmoreland Frick Hospital Foundation / Excela Health, 532 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, PA 15601, in memory of Charles M. Seamens.
