5 tips from Toastmasters to add humor to a presentation
ENGLEWOOD, Colorado., January 28, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Humor has long been a favorite tool of successful speakers, and not just because it can make the audience and presenter feel better. Laughter has also been shown to improve immune function, lower blood pressure, improve mood, and decrease stress and depression.
In addition to the reasons listed above, adding humor to your presentation will make it more engaging and memorable to those in attendance. Toastmasters International, the world’s leading organization dedicated to developing communication and leadership skills, offers these tips to keep an audience entertained:
Make your material relatable. Use your own life to find humor and add it to your presentation. We share a lot more similarities than differences and people want to identify with a speaker. Humor is a great way to add that need.
Life is full of fun times – use them. Sometimes we need to take a closer look, but even a little bit of humor can be developed and used effectively in your presentation.
Help the audience relax. Sometimes the higher the stress, the greater the need to help your audience laugh. Even the most serious topics can contain appropriate humorous observations.
Jokes have a place, but be careful. Jokes should be material-related, brief, and uncomplicated in nature. Also, always be aware of your language to make sure it is suitable for your audience.
Play with the audience. If possible, engage one or two audience members to help make your point, or use them as an example of your topic.
